Filed under: cPanel, database, feature, version

cPanel introduces the Database Mapping feature with version 11.25.1.

This feature lays the groundwork for providing more flexibility in naming databases and database users.

In the past, cPanel has always appended an account’s username to any database name or database username created by the account (for example, a database might be named “user_dbname”). This changes with the addition of the Database Mapping feature.

In cPanel 11.25.1, Database Mapping provides the following benefits:

1. Accounts transferred from non-cPanel servers, such as those running Plesk or Ensim, will no longer have the cPanel account name added as a prefix to the names of databases and database users. This means applications like blogs and forums should work with minimal (or no) changes after transfer.
2. Server owners can disable use of the database name prefix server-wide. If a server owner chooses this option, databases and database users will no longer be created with the cPanel account as a prefix (for example, a database could be named “dbase” instead of “user_dbase”). This option is not reversible.

Both the above features will make a server incompatible with older versions of cPanel. If either
1) a non-cPanel account is transferred to an 11.25.1 server ; or
2) the server owner opts to disable prefixing, then that server will not be able to later downgrade to 11.25.0.

Likewise, transferring an account from a cPanel system that does not use the database prefix to one that does (e.g., cPanel 11.25.1 with prefixing disabled, to cPanel 11.25.0) will result in support issues. Databases and database users whose names lack the prefix will not be manageable in the cPanel interface.

How can a particular email account be ‘disabled’ temporarily. Note that the email account should not be ‘deleted’ ? Is this possible at all via cPanel?

Solution :

There is no direct functionality in cPanel at the moment for this. This feature might be added at a later stage.
However, you can achieve this functionality by modifying a few entries via SSH.

Comment out the entries related to the particular email account in the following locations:
/home/user/etc/domainname/passwd
/home/user/etc/domainname/shadow
/home/user/etc/domainname/quota

Make sure that you just comment them and NOT delete them as you might need them back later.

After a fresh installation on a CentOS server and following all the standard steps, it is not connecting to WHM on port 2087.

Fix :

CentOS has default iptables (firewall) rules that block access to cPanel ports when out of the box.
You can flush them using the following command :

iptables -F

Also, remove them from /etc/sysconfig/iptables to prevent them from re-appearing on a system reboot or service restart.

This should fix the issue!

Issue :

How can you access cPanel like, say, http://domainname.com/xyz ? This is for security purposes.

Solution :

This can be done but not recommended as it would not be of much effect security-wise.
Even if you change it, cPanel/WHM would still run on the standard ports (2082/2083 & 2086/2087) which is known to everyone. If you have a valid cPanel license then you can contact their support and get the ports changed. This coupled with a strong password (change regularly) should be good enough.

However, coming back to the original question, you can achieve it in the following way :

Go to /usr/local/apache/conf/httpd.conf
Find the following line :

ScriptAliasMatch ^/?cpanel/?$ /usr/local/cpanel/cgi-sys/redirect.cgi

Comment it out by adding a ‘#’ at the beginning and add the following line below that line :

ScriptAliasMatch ^/?xyz/?$ /usr/local/cpanel/cgi-sys/redirect.cgi

Issue :

Following message occurs every time when trying to connect to an own dedicated server from other servers.

Access Denied: Referrer Check

Functions in cPanel / WHM are available only directly through the cPanel and WHM interfaces or through our XML API. It appears that this request is coming from a referring site and might be malicious. Administrator Note: If new ips
were recently bound to this server manually you must restart cpsrvd.
If you wish to continue to this page, you may do so but please note that allowing other sites to tell you which actions to perform in cPanel / WHM could be a security risk. Continue at Your Own Risk!

Fix :

The message says it all. Isn’t it?

But if you still want to prevent this message from coming up every time you try to connect then disable the following option in WHM >> Tweak Settings >> Security section :

Only permit cpanel/whm/webmail to execute functions when the browser provided referrer (Domain/IP and Port) exactly matches the destination URL. This will help prevent XSRF attacks, but may break integration with other systems, login applications, and billing software. Cookies are required with this option enabled.

Issue :

No email accounts have been created on the domain but still the mail folder is taking up huge space.

Solution :

When a cPanel account is created, a default email account with the cPanel username is also created automatically.
In this case it seems that it has been set as catchall which is why any email sent to the domain at anything@yourdomain.com is saved under the default email address. You can delete them via Webmail .
(cPanel >> Email Accounts >> At the bottom, you will see the cPanel username and a Webmail icon besides it. Login to it using your cPanel password and delete the emails.)

To disable catchall and prevent this from happening again, do the following :

1. Login to the cPanel of the domain.
2. Click on ‘Mail’ icon.
3. Click on ‘Default Address’.
4. Click on ‘Set Default Address’ link.
5. Enter :fail: in the text box and click on ‘Change’ button.

This should fix the problem!

Issue :

On a brand new server with a clean cPanel install, apache does not want to start.

root@server [~]# service httpd start
Syntax error on line 416 of /usr/local/apache/conf/httpd.conf:
UserDir “enable” keyword requires a list of usernames
root@server [~]#

Fix :

This usually happens when Apache mod_userdir Tweak is enabled in WHM before adding any accounts. This creates blank UserDir directives in the httpd.conf file which will not let Apache start.
To get around this, simply disable the tweak until the first account is created.
However, cPanel is reviewing this and should be fixed soon.

Issue :

How to restrict cPanel account users from resetting their account passwords?

Solution :

1. Create a new feature list via WHM >> Packages >> “Feature Manager”
2. Keep the ‘Change Password’ option unchecked.
3. Edit the concerned packages and assign the new feature list to them.

Now the users would not be able to reset the password via cPanel.

However, if you want to disable the password reset option which appears after an incorrect cPanel login attempt then :

1. Go to WHM >> Tweak settings.
2. Uncheck the option ‘Allow cPanel users to reset their password via email’ and save the settings.

This will not let the users reset their passwords via the ‘you can reset your password by entering your username’ link.
